J. Carlene Roberts, MA, LPC
Carlene is an experienced Licensed Professional Counselor providing psycho-therapeutic services to individuals, couples, families and groups. She primarily works with women and teen girls (age 13 and up) specializing in depression (mood disorders), stress management and anxiety disorders. She has experience working with women struggling with postpartum depression, and helping clients experiencing grief/loss. Carlene also often works with couples impacted by infidelity.
Her approach to counseling/psychotherapy is holistic – an integration of healthy psychological models with a foundation of biblical precepts. She recognizes that people are physical, social, spiritual, and psychologically thinking and feeling human beings. She works collaboratively with clients to help them develop healthy patterns of thinking, behaving, and relating so they can experience satisfying relationships and thrive in daily life. Her style is relaxed and relational. She provides a safe and supportive environment where people feel accepted, valued, heard, and cared for as they navigate the challenges and transitions of life. Carlene’s personal journey to wellness, and her integration of evidence-based psychotherapy and biblical precepts have equipped her to best serve clients. She is committed to providing the highest quality counseling/psychotherapy services - And dedicated to helping clients find effective solutions to life’s challenges; empowering them to thrive at home, school, work, in their communities, and in their relationships. Her desire is to help people grow and heal to be their best self, live life with joy, and experience healthy meaningful relationships.
Carlene received her Bachelor’s in psychology and elementary education (double major). She spent thirteen years teaching children and working with families in both public and private schools. During those years, she and her husband moved several times due to his job transfers while parenting two active children. She has spent time helping children, teens and adults through community service organizations, and served in church leadership roles as Director of women’s and children’s ministries. After moving to Greenville, SC in 2005, she took the leap to follow her passion for helping others by earning her Masters in mental health counseling and completing licensure requirements for the State of South Carolina. She did internships in a private practice setting, a non-profit women’s shelter for victims surviving domestic violence, a non-profit center counseling female adolescents and women who were survivors of sexual abuse/assault, and in a university college counseling center. Prior to moving to the SC Coast in 2018, Carlene ran a successful private practice in Greenville SC, and worked as Clinical Counselor in the Anderson University Counseling Center as well as a Psychology Adjunct Instructor.
Carlene is a native of SC, married for 32+ years to Mark, and they have two awesome young adult children living in the Upstate of SC. She enjoys reading, music and décor projects. She loves good food and conversation with family & friends. Carlene and Mark enjoy coastal living with their golden retriever, Maggie – especially walks on the beach!
